The psychotherapeutic approach to learning for children with neurodevelopmental disorders:
The psychotherapeutic approach used for children who school refuse is centred around creating a supportive and understanding environment that addresses the underlying emotional, psychological, and behavioural issues contributing to their refusal. The program begins with a comprehensive needs assessment, involving both the child and parents to establish clear objectives and identify specific challenges. This initial assessment guides the development of a tailored intervention plan. The therapeutic process includes building a trusting relationship with the child, helping them express and manage their anxieties, and gradually reintroducing them to the school environment in a structured and supportive manner. Additionally, the program may incorporate the expertise of allied health professionals such as speech therapists and occupational therapists to address any concurrent developmental or sensory processing issues that may be impacting the child's ability to attend school.
Techniques Utilized:
-
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to address and reframe negative thoughts and fears about school.
-
Gradual exposure techniques to slowly and systematically reintroduce the child to the school environment.
-
Relaxation and mindfulness strategies to reduce anxiety and improve emotional regulation.
-
Social skills training to enhance interactions with peers and teachers.
-
Parental guidance and support to implement consistent and supportive routines at home.
-
Coordination with teachers and school staff to create a welcoming and accommodating school environment.
-
Speech therapy to address any communication difficulties that may be contributing to school refusal.
-
Occupational therapy to assist with sensory processing issues and enhance adaptive functioning in the school setting.
